In their introductions, both Cyrus and Savio state a desire to capture the joy and individuality of the performers in a non-stereotypical way, and generally they succeed; the photographs literally leap off the page. The approximately 190 color photographs, mostly of dancers executing Cyrus's choreography along with some close-ups and portraits, are crisp, beautiful, energetic, and stylish. Jones further enhance this eloquent testimony to the vibrant presence of black men in modern American dance. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Jones, of the American Dance Asylum and the Bill
"Gloriously beautiful photographs long overdue." according to A Customer. I came across this book strictly by accident while visiting one of my favorite bookstores. I was amazed at its almost hauntingly dignified beauty, not only in capturing the intensity of dance, but also conveying a remarkable grace to the dancers and choreographers it presents. This book affirms the importance and contributions of African-American men in the world of dance. I fear that sometimes we forget and/or minimize those contributions. "Vital Grace" is a long overdue celebration of magnificent artists. Strongly recommended.. "Excellant photography -gorgeous subjects" according to A Customer. This book is beautiful--The grace and movement of the dance is captured in a fluid and electric manor. I highly recomend this book. Demark Manigo said Awesome!!!. This book is very well put together. It captures a lot of what a black male dancer is strong, refined, vulnerable, powerful. At times I wish there was more to say in actual written English, but then that would take away from what these photos convey. My only wish is that I hope to see even more of the diversity that a male dancer, in this case the black male dancer, inhabits.
