I borrowed this book from our Public Library for my 2-year old train lover (he picked it out for the cover and illustrations), and we both liked it so much that I purchased it on Amazon. The words are simple and rhythmic and tell a simple story of traveling across the country to the west coast. The beautiful pastel illustrations flesh out the words magnificently. They are rich with things to look at, yet very soft and calming at the same time. The parallels presented in the pictures with each left/right spread are wonderfully engaging. For example, I love the real train going through a rainstorm while the toy train runs past th. -year old train lover (he picked it out for the cover and illustrations), and we both liked it so much that I purchased it on Amazon. This book is fabulous; the rhythms and cadence of the story are wonderful. Two different "stories" are being told at the same time on different sides of the page on the left a real train and on the right a child's imagination of the same scene with their toy train. This book helps develope language and imagination.. "I like this book" according to Ulyyf. This is a re-illustrated version of a largely forgotten Margaret Wise Brown book. If you google you can find one or two of the original images floating around, if you're curious.In THIS version, the second little train (as you can see on the cover) is a toy train. The writing is simply repetitive, just right for little children, and the connection between what the real train is doing and what the toy train is doing is sweet and imaginative.Two things bugged me, one very minor and one a little more seriously.Firstly, although the trains are going "to the west", if you were to look at a map, with North at the top (as is typical),
