DESCRIPTION:

In this quirky yet sweet picture book about the joy and power of reading, Duck learns that even books without pictures can be fun. While he and his friend Bug may struggle at first to decipher their book, they stick with it, and before long they discover that not only can they read it, but it deserves a place on the shelf with all their favorite picture books. Author-artist Sergio Ruzzier has created a fanciful tribute to books of all kinds. It includes both words AND pictures.

One of the final spreads portrays the duck and his friend safe at home in his bedroom, which contains a shelf crammed with books. "Where are the pictures?!" the fuzzy yellow bird exclaims in dismay upon opening it up. At first, the pictures are set against a canvas of white space and then slowly expand as the duck begins to envision scenes with each additional word he reads. His imagination takes off, and along with his tiny cricket friend, the duckling is swept away on a fantastic adventure. His interest and enthusiasm flourish as he continues, reading words that are funny and sad, wild and peaceful. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston . Great to share with young readers! I was this book at the library where my son-in-law works in Portland, Oregon and HAD to have it! I work in a primary-level elementary school and it's so appropriate to share. I like the before-and-after "story" shared on the endsheets.. Great story! Julie Frentz I used this book as a mentor text while my second grade class was writing their own books. The story line, illustrations and creative text sparked so many creative ideas! Love this book!!. S. Pursel said Outstanding Book. Great book! Our 5 year old granddaughter loved it. I'm getting another copy for her other grandmother who is a first grade reading specialist.
