DESCRIPTION:
Robertson's superbly crafted book will introduce YA readers to the achievements of women that they perhaps never knew existed through a fascinating historic perspective. --Carol P. . Julia Archibald Holmes, a suffragist and the first woman on record to climb a Colorado mountain (Pikes Peak, 1858); Susan Anderson, a physician who tended the folks in Fraser Valley until she was 80 years old; and Coral Bowman, who started an American school of technical climbing, are among the mountain women included in the book. Robertson recounts the experiences of some of these independent, courageous women and their successes. Highly recommended for regional history and women's history/achievement collections. Clark, R. Climbers and skiers will enjoy stories of those who participated in a dangerous sport requiring much skill and courage. Lee High Scho

I have camped and backpacked in the Colorado Rockies many times and loved reading about its early pioneer days. Each story is carefully researched and presented. Many of the women encountered harsh resistance as they tried to homestead or pursue their varied outdoor interests, but, the overall theme for the stories is how courageous and strong the women were. I loved this book and although, I give away most of the books I buy, this one I keep close at hand.. "This book is wonderful!" according to Donna Metcalf. Read it before you go the the Rocky Mountains. Then have fun exploring the places that are described. These women are awesome and I would love to meet the author, Janet Robertson.
Since the Pikes Peak gold rush in the mid–nineteenth century, women have gone into the mountains of Colorado to hike, climb, ski, homestead, botanize, act as guides, practice medicine, and meet a variety of other challenges, whether for sport or for livelihood. Arlene Blum provides a new introduction to this edition.. Janet Robertson recounts their exploits in a lively, well-illustrated book that measures up to its title, The Magnificent Mountain Women
