I own "The Five Keys to the Secret World of Remedios Varo" and it is easily the best book on her and the only one which attempts and interpretation of her art. A beautiful book, lavishly illustrated, well bound and printed and with six informative essays. (Another reviewer has listed the essays and their authors). I'd say if you own this book, the Catalogue Raisonné and the biography by Janet Kaplan you will own all the books on Remedios Varo worth owning. I wish a more thorough biography would be published giving more information on her life in Mexico. I am amazed how quickly this book went out of print and how scarce . Essential reading for fans of Varo, Fourth Way, and Surrealism Ellen Etc. This book was extremely difficult to lay hands on. As of this writing, there are currently NO copies of the English edition for sale anywhere online, either new or used. I borrowed one through interlibrary loan and was delighted to finally read it.The book is quite large, 11.5" x 11.5", which allows for beautiful reproductions, some even spanning two pages. And the essays are even more illuminating, as they unlock the symbolism of Varo's work from a great range of perspectives. For example, one finds many figures that are both human and mechanical, with, say, bicycle wheels instead of feet; this is a visual representation of t. beautiful! This book is so gorgeous, and so much more than I expected. If you are even remotely interested in the art of Remedios Varo, you will want to own this. It is a work of art in and of itself.
This book places in our hands the five keys that will unlock the treasure chest where the secrets of this painter s magic world are kept: the esoteric key, the Surrealist key, the literary key, the key of dreams and the architectural key.
