LeUyen Pham’s adorable, vibrant illustrations bring Mary Brigid Barrett’s singsong text to life in a board book for the very young. If you can pat a cake, why not a peach or a cold and bumpy pickle? How about a fuzzy caterpillar crawling on your knee? A well-known rhyme expands into a tactile exploration of a toddler’s world.

Pham’s stylized cartoons are done in a muted color palette; eye-catching patterns on the clothing and in the backgrounds infuse the scenes with a lively energy. The last two double-page spreads skillfully bring the energy down as a pair of brown-skinned siblings pat Mommy, Dad and each other before patting a pillow and teddy at bedtime. Youngsters will recognize the exuberance represented here as their own.—Kirkus Reviews . Barrett’s verse scans with a pleasingly jaunty rhythm

Michael Morand said Pat a puddle - SPLAT!. We were given Pat-a-cake along with All Fall Down when they first came out and my 10m old daughter LOVES both books! Not only are the images wonderful (and multi racial), and the rhymes enjoyable, this book also allows interaction. We read through each page patting the pictures. I can only imagine that as she gets older it'll become even more fun! Pat-a-Cake is a really cute take on the old nursery rhyme that asks, if you can pat a cake, what about all sorts of other things, like a pickle or a tomato? The silly, sing-song rhymes are a lot of fun, and my daughter loves the bright, cheerful illustrations. Highly recommended!. Bob Walch said Hands on approach for toddlers.. This board book encourages the toddler to get involved with the reading by touching or giving a pat to the objects shown on each page. Whether it is a leaf, pickle, caterpillar, teddy or mommy or dad, the child is urged to make contact with a pat of the hand. The book is sturdy enough to withstand numerous pats so let your little one pat away.I also liked the fact that the children and adults pictured here were multi-racial. This is definitely a nice touch. For an older child this book would be an easy beginning reader if the child is re
