There is no going back.” That suits Aleria. Only a few close friends support her. How will these backward people cope? And in this realm, so removed from the rest of its world, we find Aleria, equally out of touch with her society. Farm machinery and the printing press have already arrived; steam engines and repeating rifles are on the way. For her, there has always been only one direction: forward.. "I wasn’t disappointed. After a slow start" according to Wendy Soliman. I was attracted by the concept for this book, which is a departure from my usual reading material. Ah, the beauty of e-books at the touch of a button! I wasn’t disappointed. After a slow start, the story quickly drew me in and I was anxious to see if Aleria could get out of the dangers that a school girl’s prank and, arguably, the boredom that goes hand in glove with a sheltered and privileged existence unwittingly involved her in. Marauding rebels, harsh conditions and an unlikely savior whom Aleria is unsure if she can trust all add to the suspense. The author’s imagination has created a g. Once I was in a couple chapters the book was fast paced and an enjoyable read. I found the book to be more suited for a younger adult then for a teenager due to some of the language used within the book. It is a simple read with well developed characters and settings. However, due to the languge (21 cent slang sayings) and the impression of the setting being set in the future but with medieval aspects I found it hard to place the exact time frame.. Andy.P said she still reacts like a spoiled. Right off the bat, in the opening chapter, this story snagged my attention. I'm a huge fan of anything that has to do with thieves, pranks, and mischief in general, so the flippant, devil-may-care attitude of Aleria (the main character) was right up my alley. However, within a few pages, the story got a bit bogged down by all the girly stuff--doing hair, talking about boys and losing virginity, dresses for the fancy ball, etc. It was just a bit too much emphasis on the shallow side of teenaged life, without any real depth. The first half of the book was very slow. It gave a little bit of insight into the world
