DESCRIPTION:
an amazing journey to the past This is such a great book! It embodies the beauty of preservation. Most people would rip out all that old plaster and dated plumbing. I'm thankful that there are people out there preserving our rich history in these lovely old structures.. So so Lupo Montegrigio I had high hopes for this one since it was praised and compared with the considerably more recent 'The well-worn interior'. But it's not that beautiful, the interiors are more empty and desolated. I rather prefer more filled interiors and these houses don't seem to be much lived in any more. It little styling has been used sometimes to make up för this (?), but it still feels somewhat bleak.. not your average architecture/design book lisa i've owned this volume for nearly 15 years and have read it at least 20 times. the text is genuinely engaging and the photos are magical. yes, many of the houses appear dreary or run down on the surface, but that's the point--these are not your average house museum destinations. i say average, because the aiken-rhett house in charleston is open for tours (which i visited specifically because of this book), but it is a museum like no other: not polished up, not restored to its former glory, just an old hous
This book captures the beauty and history of 20 American houses that have survived the ravages of time. The visual impact of these houses is enhanced by text that explores the history of the architecture and "who" the houses are - the stories of the family dynasties, hauntings and elderly eccentrics who maintain the houses.. The dilapidated elegance imparted by old wallcoverings and faded or peeling paint, antique furniture in varying stages of repair and a respect for "how things were" is revealed in photographs
