A real pageturner A fairly close Biblical adaptation of the relationship of Saul and David, along with the influence of the prophet Samuel. Pretty gritty writing, though lacking a little dialogue which would have better supported the narrative. Do I imagine an upcoming sequel on King David?. "Pure Gold" according to Amazon Customer. Holbert remains faithful to the biblical text while at the same time infusing the story of Saul with imaginative, vivid dialogue and detail. Holbert is a craftsman of words, and this book is pure gold.. Who thinks about Saul? I love this book! Fantastic psychological drama from a master storyteller. Read it when you are ready to challenge some deeply-help assumptions about heroes and anti-heroes in the Jewish/Christian biblical/mythical past.
A retelling of the story of King Saul that does what few biblical scholars have done: Holbert has raised not just Samuel from the dead, but Saul and all the hosts of Israel as well! Here is a novel that pulses with all the complexity, intrigue, and depth of life as we know it! --Roy Heller, Associate Professor of Old Testament, Perkins School of Theology
