DESCRIPTION:

Excellent resource JoyceSi I had been googling about POW escapes during WW II for months when I came across this book. It feels meticulously researched and it's exactly what I needed to complete my own research on a related topic. It's well-written, scholarly, and imho, authoritative. Extremely well done.. Lots of Information. As a collector of WWII cloth maps, I have been looking for the information given in this book for over 10 years. Great Book, lots of good information, if you are interested in cloth maps this is the best on the maps printed by MI9 in England. Waiting for a book on Cloth WWII maps printed in the United States, and India.

'A story of amazing inspiration and ingenuity in a country at war' - Antiques Diary 'A mammoth account of MI9's activities' - The Times 'Only now, thanks to the investigative work of Barbara Bond are we able to see something like the full story of the race to beat the Germans' - Sue Baker, Love Reading

The map production program is described, together with its progress and the challenges faced. The ingenious methods of smuggling the maps into the camps, with other escape aids, in apparently innocuous leisure items are described. The various groups of maps are identified and described, together with the source maps on which they were based. Coded correspondence with the camps is discussed, and a successful deciphering of some of that correspondence is provided.. The creation of MI9 in December 1939, the rationale for the new military intelligence branch and the context of the history of military mapping on silk is outlined in this history. The maps were then copied and reproduced to support the escapes

Barbara Bond spent her career as a map researcher in the Ministry of Defence, eventually becoming the senior civilian Director and Deputy Chief Executive.
