There are plenty of problems with this book and it certainly deserves no more than one star! One big problem is that it contains a lot of old pseudoscience. Instead of building on modern research about feline behavior problems, the author builds on books and articles from 1960-1970. "Useful for the layperson working with a large number of cats" according to Omega Man. About me: I'm not a vet, but I have a technical background and I'm essentially a volunteer "feline occupational therapist" and "used cat salesman" for a relatively large local shelter. In other words, a few hours a week I interact with shelter cats to reduce their stress level (so they are less likely to become immunocompromised) and keep them socialized. Do not buy this book -- info is already in every other cat behavior book Kristen Precht I came to this book wanting veterinarian-type insights into the fascinating behavior of my cats. I was beyond the average books, and wanted more! Although this book has lots of fancy words, the actual information is not anywhere near insightful. In fact I knew most of the information from another behavior book I had read. The research is horribly out of date, and who knows what exciting new findings have come up in the past 20 years -- certainly not Dr. Beaver. I am a researcher and writer myself in another area, and this is just unforgivable.

Beaver also co-authored Efficient Livestock Handling: The Practical Application of Animal Welfare and Behavioral Science (2015) and was a section editor for the highly respected Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior (which won the PROSE Award and CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title), both published by Elsevier/Academ
