A steady 'plodder' more than a high flier he learnt his trade craft serving, and commanding, the Capital's busiest and most challenging fire station, Brixton. A fireman first and foremost, he provides a valuable human story into the life and history of the London Fire Brigade from 1965
Beyond the Flames was voted into the top 3 UK non fiction writers for the 2013/14 People's Book Prize.. As a teenager at a South London comprehensive school young David Pike was determined not to follow the advice of his careers teacher; factory life wasn't for him. At sixteen he seized the offer of a place as a Junior Fireman with the London Fire Brigade and started a journey that spanned four decades and numerous roles within the Fire Brigade. In many amusing anecdotes, he describes the camaraderie and epic fund raising efforts as well as the accounts of devastating fires that sometimes ended in tragedy. David Pike's book takes the reader 'Beyond the Flames' and details a long and successful career rising through the ranks of the London Fire Brigade
"A fireman's tale" according to ColinF. I served in the Fire Brigade and this book brought back a lot of memories of similar incidents that I attended during my service. Having said that this is a book that will appeal to many giving a insight into the social conditions in inner London in the 60's and 70's and how the Fire Service dealt with and helped the public. The book is much more than just a list of fires attended, David's career involved some major charity efforts and ended at a senior officer level where he was involve. As an ex London Fireman I could relate to a lot of what this book i to it's endings all about. It is easy reading, full of nostalgia and flows chronologically to it's ending. Excellent!
