'One of the author's very best productions, with splendid pace, bright lines.' Saturday Review of Literature 'A joy to read from beginning to end, especially in its acute sensitivity to the contrasts between this era and that of Miss Marple's youth.' New York Times 'Miss Christie's pearly talent for dealing with all the words and pomps that go with murder English-style shimmers steadily in this tale of the noisy woe that shatters the extremely expensive peace of Bertram's famously old-fashioned hotel.' New Yorker

What "improvements" have been made for the Signet edition? For every publishing house putting out her works, there seem to be a new batch of editors altering Agatha Christie's words and the sound of her voice. What's the matter with these publishers? Whose voice do they thin. "Two old folks take on a criminal mastermind - and win!" according to Whistlers Mom. Agatha Christie published her first mystery in 1920 and the last two were published after her death in 1976. That's a long run in anyone's terms. It's not just a mystery, but a look at ageing and at how we deal (or refuse to deal) with change.Like Christie herself, Miss Jane Marple is a product of the Edwardian Era. Like all older people everywhere at every time, she spends a great deal of time thinking about the past. But the shrewd Miss Marple never LIVES in the past. She know. 0's. And how can you say her writing is anything but great? That said Angela Brown How can you rate Agatha Christie any other way than 5 stars? And how can you say her writing is anything but great? That said, I really loved the story, especially since I have never seen it in TV. It is suspense full, has some humor, and unfolds in the later years of Mrs. Marble, when she has to deal with "modern times" on top of trying to catch a killer. I still prefer her earlier adventures, but I can recommend this novel to anybody who likes crime mysteries.

Yet not even Miss Marple can foresee the violent chain of events set in motion when an eccentric guest makes his way to the airport on the wrong day. When Jane Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she's looking for at Bertram's: a restored London hotel with traditional decor, impeccable service -- and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer
