A direct and truthful transcript of life in Russia in the early 1800's.
In 1847, he gave up his studies and, after several aimless years, volunteered for military duty in the army, serving as a junior officer in the Crimean War before retiring in 1857. Count Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. Seeking religious justification for his life, Tolstoy evolved a new Christianity ba
Orphaned at nine, he was brought up by an elderly aunt and educated by French tutors until he matriculated at Kazan University in 1844. His diary, started in 1847, was used for self-study and self-criticism; it served as the source from which he drew much of the material that appeared not only in his great novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), but also in his shorter works. Anna Karenina, a Great Book! James Tolstoy considered this his greatest novel. It tells the simultaneous stories of Anna, a beautiful aristocratic woman, who leaves her cold, statesman husband and son for the dashing Count Vronsky, and Anna's sisters and their marriages, Kitty to the country farmer and agrarian reformer, Levin. The characters are wonderfully developed and interesting. However, the most interesting thing to me is the full and complete picture of Russian life in the the late 1880's as it moves from a feudal society to a modern one. The book is long. "and really enjoyed the movie" according to Amazon Customer. The item arrived a little bit earlier than the estimated arrival time. I had read this novel for AP literature, and really enjoyed the movie, I pretty much forced my best friend to watch the movie, and she absolutely loved it, so I though it would be best to buy this novel for her birthday. The packaging was great, and the novel was in great condition, I hope my friend likes this novel as much as I did.. A book of a different time Headed South like many books of the period - very wordy. Simple characters with extravagant descriptions. Last few chapters were most interesting to me. First 90% seemed to be setting the stage by beating the proverbial dead horse over and over again until he finally woke up and ran to the finish. Was glad to finish this classic. Will not come back to read it again
