DESCRIPTION:

“One cannot praise enough Porter’s method of representing Czech fiction of the 20th century by the in-depth study of a few, but well-chosen, prose writers. Clear, competent, and useful.”  —Modern Language Review

The book spans the entire century, from the newly created Czechoslovakia after 1918, through the years of Nazi occupation and Communist rule, the Prague Spring, and finally on to the Velvet Revolution of 1989.. This book is a lucid and balanced appraisal of some of the best Czech fiction of the 20th century. Beginning by setting out some of the chief features of Czech literature, notably its preoccupations with lyricism, civic-mindedness, and comedy, there follow discussions such authors as Capek, Hašek, Hrabal, Škvorecký, Pavel, Klíma, as well as Hodrová, Viewegh and Topol

"Excellent overview of Czech fiction" according to Brian in Newton NJ. Excellent overview of Czech fiction. Porter offers a well researched and clear survey of popular Czech writers, including s few lesser known writers in the West. His observations of the works of Hrabal, Klima and Capek are very insightful. I would recommend this work to anyone interested in East European literature.
